Watches Pilots Describe Wearing

This is not a best-pilot-watch ranking. The watch working pilots describe is a cheap Casio that can hit the flight deck: an F-105W for a full-face backlight, and an A500W when they want world time. A Garmin D2 is optional, and owners mostly talk about METARs, pulse ox, a timer, and a red light. Mechanical “pilot watches” are gifts. The same products, with the GA side of that D2 argument, are on the GA watches page.

Three clusters

What has to be on the wrist, what D2 owners actually tap, and what the forums already called jewelry. Nothing here is crowned.

  1. What pilots wear · cheap digital

    Casio F-105W-1A

The F105W pilots named. Amazon listed $17.97, against a $29.95 list price. Full-face EL backlight. Not a world-time watch.

    • Good for: A resin digital you can scratch on the flight deck
    • Skip if: You need local and Zulu, or a world map, on the face
    Check price on Amazon
  2. What pilots wear · world time

    Casio A500WA-1ACF

The silver A500W with WORLD TIME on the face. Amazon listed $55.99, in stock. That is above the $15–$30 pilots guessed.

    • Good for: Digital world time on a watch you can still replace
    • Skip if: You wanted the F-105W’s $17.97 price
    Check price on Amazon
  3. Optional · D2 extras

    Garmin D2 Air X15

$649.99 on Garmin’s page, in stock. Owners cite METAR, pulse ox, a timer, and a red light. Not a moving map they rely on.

    • Good for: Weather and pulse ox on the wrist when the phone is put away
    • Skip if: A $17.97 Casio already shows the time you need
    Check price at Garmin
  4. Optional · higher D2

    Garmin D2 Mach 1 Pro

List price $1,399.99. Garmin’s page was not selling it when opened, with a 5–8 week availability note. Owners say they skip the moving map.

    • Good for: Reading the spec, not for assuming you can check out today
    • Skip if: An X15 owner already told you the Mach 1 map is not the point

Compare at a glance

The role column is the honest sort. A higher price is not a higher rank. Mechanical brands are not in this table because they are not a buy list.

Model Role What is actually on it Listed price Where to buy
Casio F-105W-1A Cheap digital EL backlight, stopwatch, alarm. Amazon title says 7-year battery. No world time ~$17.97 (list $29.95) Amazon
Casio A500WA-1ACF World time World time, 4-city multi-time, LED light, countdown timer, stopwatch, 5 alarms. Module 3437 ~$55.99 Amazon
Garmin D2 Air X15 Optional METAR/TAF, pulse ox, red and white LED flashlight, UTC plus other time zones. Part 010-03014-50 ~$649.99 Garmin
Garmin D2 Mach 1 Pro Optional, higher price METAR/TAF, pulse ox, red or white flashlight. Moving map is the part owners say they skip. Part 010-02804-80 ~$1,399.99 list · not sellable when opened Garmin

Prices seen Oct 2, 2026. The $15–$30 Casio figures in pilot threads are what posters said. The shelves we opened were $17.97 and $55.99. A Timex is in the threads as “a $20 Timex,” with no model number, so it is not a row.

What the threads actually split on

Airline posters describe a digital that can take a knock and still show world time. The D2 argument is optional on top of that, not a replacement for it.

A dedicated pilot watch is optional. On r/flying, one pilot’s line was a $30 Casio dual-time digital, and beyond that you are buying jewelry. Another named the F105W at “15 bucks” for a long battery and a usable backlight. A third has used a $20 Timex for 15 years and 4,000+ hours; no model was named, so this page does not invent one. On r/aviation, an airline pilot who flies the A320 and the 737 Classic said the work watch needs digital world time and a price that will not hurt when it hits the flight deck, and named the A500W: five work watches, all Casios. Another pilot dropped a Garmin Fenix for a Casio with local and Zulu and called pilot watches overpriced jewelry that tells the time.

  • The model pilots named: F105W. The live Amazon listing is F-105W-1A, model number F105W-1OS
  • What the listing title claims: EL backlight, 1/100-second stopwatch, daily alarm, 7-year battery, water resistant. It does not claim a second time zone
  • Listed price: ~$17.97, with a $29.95 list price on the same page, and a delivery date rather than a sold-out notice. A pilot’s “15 bucks” is close to $17.97 and is not this shelf price
  • Photo: Amazon listing image, white background
  • $17.97 is the cheap scratch watch in this set. The A500W listing is $38.02 more ($55.99 − $17.97)
  • The upgrade over an F-91W, which one r/aviation comment named once, is the full-face EL backlight. The F-91W is not a separate card
  • No world time and no world map. The A320/737 Classic comment asked for digital world time and named the A500W, not this watch
  • The Amazon description also disagrees with itself on case size, so no millimeter figure is printed here

Choose the F-105W when the wrist needs a readable digital you can bang and replace. Vs the A500W: you save $38.02 and give up world time. It is not a dual-time watch, even though pilots sometimes say “Casio” and mean both.

  • The model pilots named: A500W. The listing that loaded is A500WA-1ACF, the silver world-time watch. A shorter Amazon URL for A500WA-1 returned 404, so that ASIN is not used
  • Bullets on the page: world time, multi-time for 4 cities, LED backlight, 1/100-second stopwatch, countdown timer, 5 alarms, about 3 years on a CR1616, module 3437, 39 mm case, stainless band. The face in the photo says WORLD TIME
  • Water resistance: the bullets say water resistant and the spec table says not water resistant. No depth rating is used
  • Listed price: ~$55.99, in stock, sold by Best Affordable Watches. That is $25.99 over the $30 figure in the “beyond that you’re buying jewelry” comment, and well over a “15 bucks” F105W
  • This is the named world-time Casio. The F-105W listing does not offer that
  • $55.99 is still $594 under the D2 Air X15 ($649.99 − $55.99) if the only job is the time
  • It is not the $15–$30 watch the threads described. The live silver listing is $55.99
  • One Amazon review of a similar A500 says it does not show two zones as analog-plus-digital at the same time. The listing’s own bullet is “multi-time (4 different cities)” and a world map, which is what the photo shows

Choose the A500W when the flight-deck watch has to show world time and you still want a Casio price, not a D2 price. Vs the F-105W: you pay $55.99 instead of $17.97 for the map and the zones. It is the work watch in the r/aviation comment, not a step up in a ranking.

  • Listed price: ~$649.99 on Garmin’s page. That variant was in stock, with a note that it ships in 1–3 business days. A second part, 010-03014-51, was the same price and also in stock
  • What Garmin prints, and what owners tap: METARs and TAFs, pulse ox (Garmin notes it is not available in every country), and a flashlight with white light plus a red setting and a red shift mode. The page also lists a UTC pointer and multiple time zones
  • What owners say they skip: on the X15 versus Mach 1 Pro thread, an X15 owner wrote they will not look at the watch for the moving map the Mach 1 offers, and that there is no need to spend more. A D2 Air owner on another thread likes local METAR/TAF on the face and does not touch navigation
  • The rest of the D2 line, named only: D2 Air, D2 Air X10, and D2 Mach 1 are the other models owners discuss. They are not separate buy cards. An X10 owner uses pulse ox, the altimeter, and METARs, and still says they do not use most of the aviation features
  • $649.99 buys the METAR, pulse ox, and red-light items owners actually mention. The page confirms those three
  • It is $750 under the Mach 1 Pro’s $1,399.99 list price, which is the gap that X15 owner was pointing at
  • $649.99 is about 36 F-105Ws at $17.97. If the job is the time, the Casio is the watch the threads describe wearing
  • Garmin also sells direct-to and a flight path. Owner comments treat that as the part they do not use in the airplane, because the EFB is faster

Choose the X15 only if you want METAR, pulse ox, or the red light on the wrist and you have already decided a Casio is not enough. It is optional. It is not the watch that wins a ranking the forums refused to hold.

See it at Garmin

  • Listed price: ~$1,399.99 on the Garmin product page, the same figure as Garmin’s Oct 24, 2023 suggested retail for the vented titanium bracelet and a silicone band. The page was not sellable: add to cart was off, in stock was false, and the availability note was 5–8 weeks
  • What the page prints: METARs and TAFs, in-flight pulse ox, and a built-in flashlight with red light or variable white light
  • What an owner said: on the Mach 1 Pro thread, one owner uses it mostly for GPS tracks and as a cockpit timer and calls the red flashlight outstanding at night, with the nav features as extras on a fitness watch. A Mach 1 owner (not the Pro) said they would not buy it again and never reference it in flight because the EFB is faster
  • The red light and the timer are the owner comments that match a real cockpit use, and the page does list a red flashlight
  • $1,399.99 is $750 over the X15. The X15 owner’s comment was that the moving map is not a reason to pay it
  • You could not add it to the cart on the page we opened. A list price with no buy button is not the same as an in-stock $649.99
  • It does not replace a $17.97 or $55.99 Casio for telling the time

Read the Mach 1 Pro as the expensive end of the same optional D2, not as a better pilot watch. Vs the X15: more money, a moving map owners say they will not look at, and no add-to-cart when we checked.

Mechanical “pilot watches” are gifts

Hamilton, Sinn, Seiko, IWC, Omega, Rolex, Breitling, and Bremont come up in the same threads. Pilots treat them as gifts and jewelry, not as the thing that tells Zulu on a trip. There is no ranked buy list here, no price, and no photo, because a price would turn a gift comment into a shopping list the forums already rejected.

Fitness watches show up the same way and stay off the cards: a Garmin Instinct Solar owner likes weeks of battery and a face with local and Zulu, and says the watch has lasted almost five years. Fenix, Forerunner, and an Apple Watch Ultra get named as fitness watches. They are not the flight-deck Casio and they are not the D2.

How we choose

How these picks were researched

Shelf prices are from pages opened Oct 2, 2026. The $15, $20, and $30 figures are quotes from pilots, labeled as such. We did not wear these watches.
